Still in the early stages with this one; but here is what I have tried so far...
First I tried to apply for Textbroker, but they only take US citizens at the moment so that was a dead end.
Then I applied for demand studios and received a rather swift rejection email as apparently they are over saturated with writers at the moment and so have raised the bar in who they accept; newbies beware!
After that I abandoned the 'up front payment' projects, and wrote and submitted an article to 'Info Barrel'. To read any of my articles please find my profile page there at:

Info barrel works by giving you a 75% commision on all ad clicks made on your article. Not a bad idea if the traffic volume was large enough to make it profitable. However, as it is, most of the articles on the site appear to have between 0-30 views on average. Mine has been live for a few days and has 11 views, 2 comments and 2 ratings, and I've not made one penny in adsense clicks. The 'success stories' on the home page of info barrel come from people who are writing HUGE amounts of content for the site; and I'm talking 500+ articles in a very short space of time. And by success I am referring to an income of $170 a month. I'm not knocking that, don't get me wrong it's good money and a great achievement. But realistically, if you divide that by the number of hours spent maintaining a really active article bank with them, you are looking at a compensation rate of around $3 an hour; and that's at the 'top end' of success. I have a sneaking suspicion the vast majority of the site make no money at all. Still, I'll stick with it, do a bit more networking and see where it leads. My target is to write 100 articles, all the while learning about using key words and backlinks to enhance their performance, and to then report back fairly on the results as the people making money reitorate the idea that you must write LOTS to make money, and be PATIENT.
Overall I feel very much as if I am hitting a bit of a brick wall with this one. Thus far it seems writing articles as a means to generate extra traffic for a profitable website=good idea. Writing articles to make money off them in their own right=difficult.
